Introduction
This
note introduces the Engineering Systems
Division (ESD) Working Paper Series, composed
of contributions by MIT faculty and staff.
This is an informal series. Papers should
be "relevant" to ESD, but our definition
of "relevant" is broad.
This
working paper series includes:
- Papers
contributing to a constructive debate
on the ESD mission, the definition of
engineering systems, visions for the future,
and so forth.
- Pre-publication
versions of papers the faculty and staff
are working on as the author seeks constructive
criticism before making final submission
to a journal.
- Annotated
lists of engineering systems references,
drawn from the experience of the faculty
and staff.
- Compendiums
of short sections from engineering systems
texts, papers, etc.
- Lists
of definitions of terms in the engineering
systems field.
The
overall goal of this is to promote constructive
discussion about engineering systems, ESD
and its future, provide a knowledge base
for that discussion, and work toward an
understanding of the engineering systems
field.
I
hope this working paper series will be a
useful contribution to what I think is ESD's
most fundamental task – defining an
intellectual agenda.
Sincerely
yours,
Joseph
