Cristina
H. Amon is the Raymond J. Lane Distinguished Professor of
Mechanical and Director of the Institute for Complex Engineered
Systems (ICES) at Carnegie Mellon University. In her role
at ICES, she has led interdisciplinary research initiatives,
established industry-sponsored multidisciplinary project
courses and fostered industry-university-state partnerships.
Amon’s
research pioneered the development of Computational Fluid
Dynamics (CFD) for thermal design subject to multidisciplinary
competing constraints. This led to her creation of a multi-stage
concurrent thermal design methodology based on hierarchical
model refinement. She has also made seminal contributions
to self-sustained oscillatory flows and thermal management
of electronics and prediction of sub-micron and nano-scale
heat transport in semiconductors. She has authored six book
chapters, one textbook, and over 160 refereed articles.
She
received her Sc.D. degree in 1988 from the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology. She is a Fellow of the American
Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and serves as chair
of the ASME HTD K-16 Committee on Electronics Cooling and
Executive Member of the ASME Electronic and Photonic Packaging
Division; a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic
Engineers (IEEE); a Fellow of the American Association for
the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and serves as chair-elect
of the AAAS Engineering. She holds several editorship positions,
including Associate Editor for the ASME Journal of Heat
Transfer and IEEE Transactions on Components and Packaging
Technology, and is co-founder of Women in Non-traditional
Graduate Studies (WINGS).
She
has been recognized for her educational and research accomplishments
by numerous awards, including the HENNAC Hispanic Engineer
of the Year Award in Education in 2003, ASME Electronics
and Photonics Packaging Division Award for Outstanding
Contributions to the Engineering and Science of Thermal
Management of Electronics in 2003, ASEE Ralph Coats
Roe Award Profession in 2002, ASME/PiTauSigma
Gustus L. Larson Memorial Award for Outstanding Achievements
in Mechanical Engineering in 2000, SWE Distinguished Engineering
Educator Award in 1999, ASME Pittsburgh Engineer
of the Year in 1999, ASEE George Westinghouse Award
for Outstanding Contributions to the Advancement of Engineering
Education in 1997.
