The LGO program offers a masters of science degree in engineering systems as an option for the dual-degree program. This section presents the three currently approved tracks under this degree option.

The rationale of the LGO program is that it offers two distinct degrees, one in Management and the other in Engineering. This fundamental philosophy means that the subjects LGO students take to fulfill their SM in Engineering Systems need to be distinct from Sloan School subjects.

To implement this requirement ESD and the LGO program have agreed that:

  • LGO students will take at least 4 Engineering Subjects in fulfilling their course requirements for the SM in Engineering Systems.
  • Engineering subjects are those taught by engineering faculty with appointments in the School of Engineering
  • These Engineering Subjects must cover at least 39 units (which means students may have taken more than 4 Engineering listings if they choose 6-unit "half" subjects). An exception to this rule applies to students in the Manufacturing Systems and Supply Chains track, who may only be able to acquire 36 engineering units while following their track's guidelines. In this case students are only required to have 36 engineering units to graduate.

The LGO program expects all LGO students working toward the SM in Engineering Systems will take the following:

ESD.751/15.064 Engineering Probability and Statistics
ESD.60 Lean/Six Sigma Processes

Furthermore, LGO requires a course in design such as 15.873 or ESD.64 and a sequence that is approved by the LGO program director and the ESD Faculty, and achieves a focus in a specific area of ESD. LGO students must have their programs approved by May of their first year. In addition, ESD LGO students should note the following ESD-specific thesis requirements:

  • An ESD Engineering Faculty Advisor is mandatory
  • Committees should be finalized and reported to LGO and ESD's Academic Office, E40-249, before students depart for their internships

Areas of focus for ESD LGO students can be acheived by completing a set of courses in one of the approved tracks listed below. An LGO student's program must be approved by the LGO Program Director and by the ESD Academic Office, E40-249, before the LGO student registers for their last semester of classes.

1. Manufacturing Systems and Supply Chains

  • The two required courses above
  • The required design elective
  • A manufacturing or supply chain physics course from the following:
    • ESD.260/1.260J/15.770J Logistics Systems
    • ESD.63/2.830/6.780 Control of Manufacturing Services
    • ESD.875/2.875 Mechanical Assemblies: Their Design, Manufacture, and Role in Product Development
    • 2.140 Analysis and Design of Feedback Control Systems
    • 2.810 Manufacturing Processes and Systems
    • 2.852 Manufacturing Systems Analysis
  • A full-semester course in supply chains:
    • ESD.267/1.273/15.762 Supply Chain Planning (half semester)
      plus ESD.268/1.274/15.763 Manufacturing System and Supply Chain (half semester)
  • One ESD elective, taught by engineering faculty. 36 total engineering units, rather than 39, is acceptable for students in this track.

2. Systems Architecture and Engineering

3. Energy and Environmental Sustainability
