Hamsa Balakrishnan

T. Wilson Career Development Assistant Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics and Engineering Systems

Dr. Balakrishnan began her appointment as an Assistant Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics and of Engineering Systems at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in January 2007. She received her Ph.D. in Aeronautics and Astronautics from Stanford University in April 2006. Her Ph.D. dissertation was on the design of algorithms for tracking and managing identities of objects in sensor networks, specifically the air traffic surveillance system.

Her research interests include algorithms for the scheduling and routing of air traffic, hybrid systems-based techniques for the collection and processing of data (surveillance), and mechanisms for the allocation of airport and airspace resources.

Dr. Balakrishnan received her B.Tech in Aerospace Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (Madras) in 2000 and an M.S. in Aeronautics and Astronautics from Stanford University in 2002. Between May and December 2006, she was a Principal Development Engineer at the University of California, Santa Cruz and the NASA Ames Research Center, where she developed algorithms for the optimization of aircraft operations at airports.
