Visiting
Scholar
David
Hartzband , Sc.D., has worked for
two-plus decades on exploring and
integrating emerging technologies
into new and existing product streams.
He has developed advanced database
and metadata technologies, including
knowledge base, similarity-based reasoning
systems and model and ontology-based
systems. He has also developed products
in the distributed middleware, content
management and collaboration areas,
as well as developing architectures
for very large-scale data and information
management systems. He has done considerable
consulting on use of emerging technologies
in conventional products and product
strategies and has also consulted
on both business and technology strategy
for early stage and established companies.
Dr. Hartzband
has worked at such companies as EMC,
Documentum, eRoom Technology, Agile
Software, General Motors, Boeing (Commercial
Airplane Company) and the Digital
Equipment Corporation, where he was
Chief Scientist for Artificial Intelligence
and Database Architect for the corporation.
He has previously held faculty positions
at Stanford University (Computer Science
Division), The College of William
and Mary (Mathematics and Marine Science)
and was last a Visiting Scholar at
MIT in the Leaders for Manufacturing
Program in 1991-92.
Dr. Hartzband’s
research has been focused on the co-evolution
of organizations and technology in
engineering companies and the technology
that those organizations develop,
adopt and use. More recently, he has
been working on issues in healthcare
information technology (HIT), and
has developed architectures for large
scale information sharing among healthcare
organizations. He is currently writing
a column on HIT for Health Center
Forum, the magazine of the National
Association for Community Health Centers
and is also writing a monthly column
on HIT for the website of the RCHN
Community Health Foundation. Most
recently he has been investigating
the relationship of GDP-based productivity
in ambulatory healthcare to technology
adoption and clinical outcomes in
those organizations.
