Welcome
to the inaugural edition of ESD’s online newsletter,
ESD Reports.
Designed
to supplement the weekly news posted on the ESD web site,
ESD Reports is a three-times-yearly publication
devoted to critical topics within ESD and the world of engineering
at-large. Our first edition is devoted to Leadership.
As the
field of Engineering broadens, going beyond traditional
Engineering Science to large-scale, complex Engineering
Systems, there is a growing imperative for engineers and
scientists who can lead, who can understand and manage the
complex social, political, environmental, and financial
challenges for the highest benefit of all concerned. That’s
why ESD’s academic programs provide Leadership training
for their students.
This
issue of ESD Reports includes an article I authored
for last year’s Engineering Systems Symposium on the
development of engineering
leaders, articles on Leadership training in LFM,
MLOG, SDM,
and TPP, and a report
on our newest leaders
in the academic world of Engineering Systems – our
new ESD Ph.D.s. You will also find brief reports on
leadership in ESD research centers, a feature on MIT
and the fashion industry, and news on upcoming
ESD events.
A schedule
for the next two editions is included, as well as areas
of focus and submission deadlines. We welcome your contributions!
We hope
you find this edition of ESD Reports thought-provoking
and informative and we look forward to receiving your feedback.
Best
wishes,
Daniel Hastings
Director, ESD
P.S.
Save the date! On April 21, The Charles L. Miller Lecture
will be delivered by Mr. James Champy, Chairman of Consulting,
Perot Systems.
