The first three books in the MIT Press Engineering Systems Book Series are now available in the MIT Press Bookstore at a 20 percent introductory discount. The newest book in the series is Engineering a Safer World: Systems Thinking Applied to Safety by Nancy Leveson. The book takes a new, systems approach to safety that is suited to today’s complex, sociotechnical, software-intensive world. Read the MIT News item here.

ESD PhD candidate Regina Clewlow presented work at the Transportation Research Board (TRB) 91st Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. from January 22-26. She presented "Interaction of High-Speed Rail and Aviation: Exploring Air-Rail Connectivity" (by Regina Clewlow, Joseph Sussman, and Hamsa Balakrishnan), which is set for publication in the Transportation Research Record (Vol. 2266) in early 2012. This work was funded by an Airport Cooperative Research Program (ACRP) Graduate Research Award.

LAI researchers Drs. Josef Oehmen and Bob Kenley have received the 2011 INCOSE Working Group Award for Collaboration with the Lean Systems Engineering Working Group. The award recognizes the group's collaborative work with PMI, LAI, and INCOSE to bridge the gap between program management and systems engineering. Visit the LAI web site for more details.

FYI--The new quarterly INFORMS journal, Service Science, which will address health care, transportation and logistics, energy distribution services, education as a complex system, hand-held communication services, and environmental services, is inviting submissions. 


Publication

“Improving aluminum recycling: A survey of sorting and impurity removal technologies”, co-authored by MSL researchers Dr. Randolph Kirchain and Dr. Elsa Olivetti along with Dr. Gabrielle Gaustad of the Rochester Institute of Technology, is available in the January edition of Resources, Conservation and Recycling.
