Fulbright Israel Post-Doctoral Fellowships for American Researchers in All Academic Disciplines

The United States-Israel Educational Foundation (USIEF), the Fulbright commission for Israel, offers 8 fellowships to American post-doctoral researchers in support of work to be carried out at Israeli universities during the course of the 2013/2014-2014/2015 academic years. The US Post-Doctoral Fellowship Program is open to candidates in all academic disciplines.

Program grants total $40,000, $20,000 per academic year. Program fellows must be accepted as post-doctoral researchers by Israeli host institutions, which agree to provide them with a standard post-doctoral grant, which they will receive in addition to their Fulbright Fellowship.  Thus, the total financial support received by Program Fellows is likely to be in the range of at least $35,000-$40,000 per year.

Applications for 2013/2014-2014/2015 Fulbright Post-Doctoral Fellowships must be submitted to the Council for International Exchange of Scholars by August 1, 2012.

Further details on the program and on application procedures may be found here.

National University of Singapore
Research Fellow/Assistant (Design of Large-Scale Systems for Uncertainty and Flexibility/Real Options)

There is an opportunity for a talented individual to join the NUS Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) as a Research Fellow/Assistant. The successful candidate will join a vibrant community of systems thinkers and build upon close collaboration between world-class institutions: NUS and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

The research project relates to the development of large-scale, complex systems for the future, in particular how to design them most effectively and profitably given the long-term uncertainties and risks. Areas of interests for application include aerospace (e.g. satellite), energy (e.g. power plants), real estate (e.g. new city development), transportation (e.g. mass transit, port management and operations), and water infrastructure (e.g. distribution, treatment) systems.

Project specifics involve development and experimental evaluation of design methods for Flexibility in Engineering Design (also called Real Options). Flexibility/Real Options have been shown in numerous cases to improve performance by 10-30% in face of uncertainty, compared to typical/prevalent design methods. The design approach provides contingencies for large-scale systems to adapt/change over time, and to extract additional value from uncertainty. The experimental methodology – developed at the MIT Engineering Systems Division – is inspired from controlled studies in medicine.

The 1-year position is available starting October 2011. It is renewable for up to two years depending on performance. Salary is competitive with North American and European standards, and is commensurate with the candidate’s qualification and experience.

Requirements:

Master's or PhD degree in an Engineering discipline (e.g. Civil, Industrial, Mechanical, Systems, Technology, Management, and Policy, Urban Planning), or other Design-related discipline

Good research experience, preferably in conducting experiments with human subjects

Good scientific writing skills

Knowledge of a programming language like MATLAB, C, C++, Java, and Excel

Interested candidates should email a cover letter and resume (~2 pages), including professional objectives and a list of publication to macardin@nus.edu.sg – please use subject “Research Fellow/Assistant Application”. Feel free to contact Dr. Michel Alexandre Cardin with any inquiries.
