What is a Specification?
Within the ESD community recurring areas of research have sometimes been referred to by a designation. Degree specifications extend that shorthand, summarizing some of the basics of what a student’s research is about in a way that is also transparent to external audiences. If a student selects a specification, upon graduating she receives a “Doctor of Philosophy… in the field of Engineering Systems” diploma with the addition of her specification as a subtitle. Having a specification is optional, it is not required or expected of doctoral students. Whether a student has a specification, or not, does not effect the structure of his program.
