Each year, the ESD faculty selects leading students from around the globe to take part in their interdisciplinary doctoral and Master’s programs. Applicants should have an undergraduate degree in engineering or applied science, an interest in the intelligent development of complex technological systems and excellent academic records. Beyond education, relevant work experience is a definite plus.

Applications are reviewed once a year and are due by January 10th for admission beginning the following Fall semester. All applications are reviewed at the same time to select not only the best candidates, but to ensure the selection of the most diverse cohort possible. Diversity in the student body is an important characteristic of the ESD Ph.D. and S.M. programs as it helps the development of the capability to deal with issues worldwide.

The Ph.D. is a full-time, residential program. An expression of our general collective belief is that doctoral students learn a lot about how to think deeply about issues, and how to do research, by sustained interaction with their faculty and peers.

We welcome prospective students to campus for our open house or by appointment.

ESD Financial Aid
Students needing financial assistance should request it in their application. Typically assistance, when available, comes in the form of graduate assistantships, MIT fellowships or external fellowships. Students should make every effort to secure funding from external sources.

For more information on admissions go directly to the FAQs about Admissions to ESD’s S.M. and Ph.D. Programs page.
