the Lecture:
Civil and Environmental Engineering
at MIT has been the birthplace of
many innovations in its 137 years
of existence. The civil and environmental
engineering profession is on the verge
of major change, as it was in the
time of Prof Charles L Miller's term
as department head in the 1960s. This
talk will concentrate on some key
directions and initiatives likely
to profoundly transform the field
at MIT. Some will correspond to the
increasing recognition of the importance
of appropriately dealing with the
ìinformation technology infrastructure
challengesî of the 21st century.
Others will address the absolute needs
to bring sustainability into action.
