About the Lecture:
In the 1960’s, Charlie Miller – the honoree of this lecture - introduced a new vision for Civil Engineering at MIT. The vision involved the aggressive application of developing information technologies and an approach of systems thinking to the multiple disciplines of the profession. This thinking was also embraced by other departments of MIT’s School of Engineering, helping to maintain the School’s preeminent position.

Today, advances in science demand a re-look at engineering at MIT, with the same boldness of Charlie’s vision. The problems and opportunities in which the School is engaged also demand an increased level of inter-departmental collaboration, raising questions of the content of disciplines and how the work of departments should be defined.

This year’s Miller Lecture will examine these issues and present a point of view of what MIT must do to maintain the School of Engineering’s distinctiveness and pre-eminence.
