Artech House recently
published "Introduction to Transportation Systems" by Joseph
Sussman (CMP) JR East Professor, Department of Civil and
Environmental Engineering and Engineering Systems Division.
Based on 44 hours
of newly developed lectures,Introduction to Transportation
Systems provides a survey of contemporary transportation
systems written by one of the original strategic planners
of the U.S. Intelligent Transportation Systems. Sussman
co-authored the IVHS America Strategic Plan, a 20-year plan
for research, development, and deployment of intelligent
transportation systems. As executive committee chair of
the Transportation Research Board, he contributed extensively
to its 1994 critical issues statement. He also gained a
global view of transportation issues through his relationship
with the largest passenger railroad in the world-East Japan
Railway Company-and a long-term traffic congestion assignment
in Bangkok.
Introduction to Transportation
Systems provides a 30-point framework underlying most transportation
systems, and it closely examines current and emergent activity
to improve both freight and passenger transportation. This
framework allows transportation professionals to more effectively
analyze existing and proposed systems. In addition, the
book outlines the needs of transportation system customers
and the complex relationships among transportation technologies,
systems, and institutions.
