Hastings
named ESD co-director
May
2003
Dear
Colleagues,
With
the enthusiastic support of Dan Roos
and the senior ESD faculty, I am very
pleased to report the appointment
of Daniel Hastings as the Co-Director
of ESD, effective immediately. As
you well know, Daniel has been the
Associate Director of ESD for the
past two years. In that capacity,
he has had primary responsibility
for ESD's varied educational programs.
In particular, he spearheaded the
development of ESD's new masters degree
and PhD programs that were approved
by the MIT faculty last year.
Daniel
has been serving as Acting Director
of ESD during Dan Roos's well deserved
sabbatical, with full responsibilities
for all aspects of the Division. Daniel's
appointment as Co-Director reflects
both the need to address the full
plate facing ESD in the year ahead,
especially as it pursues the initiatives
suggested by the ESD Visiting Committee,
as well as the excellent job that
Daniel has been doing as Associate
and Acting Director.
Although
I expect the two Dans to share responsibility
for all aspects of the Division, Daniel
Hastings will continue to focus much
of his attention on the Division's
educational programs and Dan Roos
will assume primary responsibility
for fundraising (a topic given high
priority by the ESD Visiting Committee)
and for the forthcoming Engineering
Systems Symposium.
I
have greatly enjoyed collaborating
with Daniel Hastings on many ESD and
Institute related matters and look
forward to continuing to interact
with both him and Dan Roos (who will
continue his leadership of ESD, now
as Co-Director) on behalf of the Division.
Please
join me congratulating Daniel Hastings
on this appointment.
