ESD Faculty and Teaching Staff Luncheon
Topic: The Risks, Costs, and Benefits
of Global Policies for Managing Polioviruses
Speaker: Kimberly M. Thompson, ScD, Associate
Professor of Risk
Analysis
and Decision Science, Harvard School of
Public Health
This talk will discuss the development
of a decision analytic model to estimate
the incremental cost-effectiveness ratios
and net benefits of risk management options
for polio (specifically future vaccination,
surveillance, response plans, and containment)
for the 20-year period following global
eradication of wild polioviruses. The
model stratifies the world according to
World Bank income levels to capture important
variability between nations, and it includes
consideration of uncertainty in key input
parameters that facilitate discussions
about robustness of the key insights
