Strategy: Simulating Disruption to Business
Recovery
The
MIT Center for Transportation and Logistics
is hosting its second annual Crossroads event
entitled "At the Crossroads of Supply Chain
and Strategy: Simulating Disruption to Business
Recovery."
As part of the daylong conference, the Center
will stage a real-time simulation of an avian
flu outbreak to show how global supply chains
are severely disrupted by such emergencies.
The simulation will involve a hypothetical outbreak
of avian flu that shuts down a fictional manufacturing
facility. A panel of executives will respond
in real-time to the unfolding emergency, which
will be shaped by prompts and pre-scripted news
bulletins.

Special ESD/ME Seminar
Topic: The collective potential: Understanding
the role of interdependence
in the design of complex systems
Speaker: Dr. Jesse Olson, Carnegie Mellon University
The design of an organization is, perhaps, one
of the most influential ingredients determining
an organization's problem-solving effectiveness.
Dramatically different behaviors (organizationally
and individually) may result from changes in
the structure and flow of an organization's
available knowledge and resources. The
design of these ties affects the diffusion and
availability of information, and the speed and
quality of organizational decisions. It
likewise affects the perception of important
relationships and behaviors in the problem space
(again, organizationally and individually),
as well as influencing what operators are applied
to navigate it. Unfortunately, knowing
how to best structure the flow of knowledge
and resources is a non-simple matter.
This is especially so in the design of complex
systems, as both the organization and the solution
space will often exhibit nonlinear, dynamical
behaviors emerging from the ongoing interaction
and interdependence between their constituents.
In this presentation, I will briefly discuss
emerging perspectives on the role of these underlying
networks and their relation to the characteristics
of the problem being addressed.
Following this, I will present two initial studies
that investigate the nature of this relationship
between organizational ties and problem-solving
performance. These studies touch, in turn,
on both the potential of increasing organizational
complexity and, alternatively, insights for
the simplification of organizational ties.

Supply Chain Club Speaker Series
Topic: The Expanding Role of Supply Chain Management
in Organizations
Speaker: Rick Blasgen, CEO and President of
The Council for Supply Chain Management Professionals
Supply
Chain Management is taking center stage in companies
around the world. Recognizing its vital
importance, many organizations are incorporating
SCM into their core business strategies and
placing executives in key positions to lead
this effort. Logistics and SCM professionals
must possess the communications skills
to take the message to the C-Level leaders and
ensure the value of an effective supply chain
is understood.
Rick spent
23 years in the CPG/Food industry. Most of this
time was spent leading SCM and learning
how to take the message to the company
leaders explaining how SCM can positively
impact the bottom line. In his role at
CSCMP, Rick spends much of his time advocating
SCM as an ambassador for our field.

Daffodil Days at MIT
Daffodil
Days is celebrated during the month of February.
The Daffodil Bouquets will be delivered on Wednesday,
22 March, the week before Spring Break. There
are 3 types of participation:
- Bouquets
cost $7.00 each.
- Gift
of Hope for $20. This generous contribution
will enable us to send a vase of daffodils
to patients who are at Mount Auburn Hospital
and MGH being treated for cancer. It is a
way of letting them know they are not alone
in their fight against this disease. The vase
of flowers will be delivered with a message
that says someone from MIT has made a contribution
to the fight against cancer and is sending
them these daffodils, in the hope they will
win their fight against cancer.
- Byrne
Bear & bouquet of Daffodils for $25, added
this year by the American Cancer Society.
Make
your check payable to the American Cancer Society,
due Tuesday, 28 February.
Thank
you for participating!
