ESD Faculty and Teaching Staff Luncheon
Title: Strategic Engineering: Designing Systems for an Uncertain Future
Speaker: Olivier L. de Weck, Associate Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics and Engineering Systems

Increasingly, complex systems and products have to be designed such that they can easily be changed or reconfigured over time to adapt to changing needs and requirements and to avoid lock-in. Architectural lock-in is known as a phenomenon where better technologies or architectures are known to exist, but sub-optimal systems continue to be operated due to high switching costs. In order to avoid lock-in, systems can be designed with embedded flexibility to lower future switching costs and optimize performance and cost under uncertainty. This talk will present principles, methods and tools that are being developed for analyzing change propagation, identifying real options and pinpointing where and how to embed flexibility during system design to promote evolution over time.
