REMINDER
Call for Nominations

Joseph A. Martore (1975) Excellence in Teaching Award

ESD is seeking nominations for the Joseph A. Martore (1975) Excellence in Teaching Award. This honor will be given to a full-time member of the ESD faculty or teaching staff in recognition of outstanding contributions in education to an ESD academic program, such as MLOG, SDM, LFM, TPP, and the ESD SM/Ph.D.

Although teaching is an important component, the Martore Award will also recognize other contributions to ESD academic program development. The honoree will receive a plaque of appreciation and a cash award of $1000.

“The thought behind the award was to recognize the leadership role that ESD/MIT faculty members serve in preparing and influencing students to make real world engineering contributions to society,” said Martore, who received both an SB and an SM in Civil Engineering from MIT.

Martore founded Strategic Management Initiatives, Inc. (SMI), to provide nuclear safety and environmental program consulting to the U.S. Government and Fortune 500 companies. Under his leadership as President and CEO, SMI was named to the Inc. 500 list in both 2002 and 2003 as one of the fastest growing private companies in the United States. Since the successful merger of SMI in February 2004, Martore has served as Vice President and division head of CALIBRE Systems, Inc., a management and technology services firm. How to submit a nomination

Nominations for faculty or teaching staff who are full time at MIT should be submitted in the form of a letter of no more than three pages to ESD Director Dan Hastings, hastings@mit.edu, E40-257. Each nominator is encouraged to seek comments about candidates from others and to integrate all feedback into one letter. Professor Hastings and a small committee will make the selection.

The deadline for submission is September 27, 2004.

Award Presentation

The award will be presented at a private dinner on October 7 and announced the next day to the ESD Community.

We look forward to your nominations.
