de Neufville and Sussman

on Airport Systems and Intelligent Transportation Systems

June 26, 2008

Articles by Professors Richard de Neufville and Joseph M. Sussman are featured in the Summer 1008 issue (Volume 30, Number 2) of the National Academy of Engineering's journal The Bridge.

The article by Professor de Neufville—Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Engineering Systems, and founding chairman of the MIT Technology and Policy Program—is on "Building the Next Generation of Airport Systems." In it, he argues that airport systems need to be rebuilt and enhanced, not by "continuing to misallocate resources by patching up component parts" but by designing "for the airport system as a whole."

In his article "Intelligent Transportation Systems in a Real-Time, Customer-Oriented Society," Professor Sussman—JR East Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Engineering Systems—describes ways in which Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) can benefit the surface transportation system. He also outlines the "organizational and institutional changes that will be necessary for the full benefits of ITS to be realized." Professor Sussman is chair of the Intelligent Transportation Systems Advisory Committee of the U.S. Department of Transportation.
